Divine Design:: St. John Resort 2013

I love my Tumblr feed because it’s a vast, never-ending sea of creativity.  I really recommend using it as a source for inspiration if you already don’t.

The dress above is something I came across last week via a WWD post and jumped on the opportunity to reblog it.  It may not look like anything special to you but I fell in love!  The silhouette is one of my favorites and is something I often gravitate towards when I’m sketching my own designs.  Forget the emaciated model, I love the drape of this dress and how it all comes together with the contrasting gold belt.  Simple is grand.

The rest of the collection is generally delightful with lots of play on drape and mixing of silhouettes.  The striped blazer also caught my attention.  What do you think?

This is my ongoing roundup from my 365 photo project where I take a photo a day from my life. I post the pics via Tumblr and Instagram for your viewing pleasure but I decided to give you the rundown at the end of each month to reflect.  Admittedly there are at least a few days each month where I’m unable to get a pic but this is the most consistent I’ve been about anything in a long time!

April recap::  I sucked at taking pictures this month but I did enjoy some nature, fashion and art.  On to the next one!

Style Profile: Devon

** This is the latest of an ongoing series profiling peeps I know with interesting style.  If you would like to be featured or nominate someone contact me at: highpointshoulder@gmail.com **

Intro::  This edition features my lovely friend Devon whom I met at work.  I was struck right away by her sense of style and ability to look cute and chic even when she has to be at work at 4am!  Devon is laid back, sweet and fun, and her clothing definitely exudes her bubbly personality.   She also loves to accessorize with a good scarf just as much as I do so of course we bonded over that!  Read ahead to learn more about Devon’s style from her own perspective…

Name: Devon Stinson

Location: Dayton, OH

Who:  I’m an aspiring graphic designer who’s been out of school for a couple years. I’m currently working as a merchandiser in retail. In my free time I enjoy doing my nails, shopping, and playing video games (mostly online games). I have a blog based on just that, being a girly-girl but also enjoying the video gaming world — www.devonstinson.com

Describe your style:  Cardigans are my biggest go-to item. Also, I love a good pair a well fitted skinny jeans. My style is pretty simple. I love to mix and match, while keeping things comfortable and causal.

My style focuses a lot on comfort. If it isn’t comfortable, I won’t wear it. When I purchase items, I have to keep in mind what I’m dressing for. My job restricts most of my fashion choices, not because of the policy but because of the work I’m doing. I’m on my feet all day, I’m consistently moving, climbing up ladders, lifting, and bending over. I wear minimal amounts of jewelry and what I do own I recycle into many outfits. I don’t own more than 2 pairs of heels/wedges. I tend to stick to flats. I’m obsessed with TOMS! I enjoy being able to mix and match items in my closet while still being comfortable.

What influences or inspires your fashion choices:  What influences and inspires my fashion choices usually depends on what I’ll be doing that day and the weather. Nothing too complicated. As far as inspiration, I’m heavily inspired by the people who surround me. Their fashion choices and opinions help me with my fashion decisions. I’m a very visual person. So, when items are displayed and advertised well, I tend to gravitate to them.

Fashion Peeve/s:

  • People who think Crocs are acceptable shoes to where outside of gardening… (in what situation are the acceptable)? UNLESS you are wearing these: Their Adrina Flats are very cute (I have a pair). ;)
  • People who wear the Victoria Secret PINK lounge wear in everyday activity.
  • Bootcut jeans tucked into boots…
  • Leggings as pants.
  • And my biggest pet peeve, when people don’t where clothes that fit them comfortable (fits too big or too small).

That’s about it! I believe there are a lot of fashion rules that can be broken, if one goes about it the right way.

Parting wisdom:  Be accepting of your body type. Learn the best ways to showcase your body. Fashion is a wonderful way to display your personality. Confidence is the best fashion item you can ever own.  :) ALSO, don’t be afraid experiment and to try new things. I know all my fashion choices aren’t perfect but I have fun with it!

Where to find you: I write a blog about pretty much anything that interests me. It’s mostly involves fashion, beauty, and video games.  www.devonstinson.com

Somestimes I Suck And It’s Not Ok

Sometimes I suck and that’s ok, not so much at the moment…

What’s a good creative solution for when your mind is in a rut?  I don’t know.  I’ve found myself in this place over and over.  I’m sure you’ve taken notice.  Ideas come and go but nothing comes to fruition.  I find myself in a daze wandering through life aimlessly.  Attainable goals but unattainable ambition.  Where is my drive?  I take a stroll on a sunny but windy day to clear my head.  Nothing.  I flip through magazines, scour the internet reading blog post after blog post.  Some of my daily reads and some of those advice posts on what to do when you have a creative block or need topics for a post.  Nothing still.  I sift through old sketches to see past glories and remind myself of what I can do and where I can go.  It’s not enough.  I go through these highs and lows so often that maybe this is just my norm.  On a roll and then I slow down and come to a halt.  Sometimes a halt is good because going through life on high-speed will wear you out.  Everyone needs time for themselves, time to cherish life.  However I find I halt a little too often.  I don’t want this to be my norm anymore but I haven’t figured out yet how to change that.  Slow and steady wins the race? A race I don’t know how long I’m in, so shouldn’t I be sprinting ahead?

This is all I have to share with you today, that and a few quick sketches I managed in my angst:

Tomorrow I’ll try again.

A View Of My Studio

If you follow me (if not I highly recommend) on Twitter, Facebook or Tumblr you’ve probably heard (and seen pics) me talking about a drafting stool I recently purchased.  I’ve slowly but surely been setting up a workspace for myself to do all of my creative endeavors (It took me 5 months to finally buy the chair).  My plan was to set up the perfect work studio and then give you all a tour.  I wanted it to be neat, tidy and aesthetically pleasing however I realized that never was going to happen.   Entropy always ensues and there is no use fighting it.  My space consists of second-hand bits and bobs: an old computer station, plastic tubs and shelves.  It’s functional but not pretty and that’s ok with me.  I have ample natural lighting, a large work surface (my desk is about 6x3ft)  and a laminate floor which means no more stained carpets!  I’ve always been a messy artist.

I can’t wait to start getting to work on some long overdue projects: sewing, painting, illustration and more.  Yes I take my sweet time to get things done; hesitance, indecisiveness, and lack of motivation aka laziness do seem to get the best of me at times but better later than never.  Also art supplies are EXPENSIVE so it’s taken years to acquire all the things I have.  This ain’t no overnight success!  Alas, I hope you will continue to follow me on my creative journey and I thank you all for your support.

Here is a mini-tour of my workspace and supplies for your inspiration and to feed that voyeuristic curiosity!

Doorway Into My Life: March

This is my ongoing roundup from my 365 photo project where I take a photo a day from my life. I post the pics via Tumblr and Instagram for your viewing pleasure but I decided to give you the rundown at the end of each month to reflect.  Admittedly there are at least a few days each month where I’m unable to get a pic but this is the most consistent I’ve been about anything in a long time!

March recap::  Where winter gave way to summer and, nature, rabbits and scarves are always fair game.  I dabbled a bit more into my personal style too which I hope you enjoy since this is a fashion related blog.

Color My Legs

I really want to add some color to my wardrobe, and lots of it.  Could it be because that’s the trend?  Bright pants and tops, maybe, but I’m not going to feel guilty for wanting something “trendy”.  In this instance I feel I’d want to add color to my closet regardless and since it’s on trend it just makes it that much easier for me to do it.  I say regardless because I’ve had a liking for colorful works of art, so it’s only natural for that love of color to translate to what I wear.

Colored Pants

My main goal at the moment is to acquire some colorful pants.  All I have is loads of denim and a few other neutral colored bottoms which has me bored like no other.  Any leads on where I can score some cute colored bottoms for someone who is smaller than average?  I’ve tried some on at a few places but haven’t had any luck.  I’m looking for some bottoms that have breathing room and not the skin suctioning skinnies the kids are wearing these days.  Suggestions highly welcomed!

On a last note I just wanted to say color isn’t only for your top half, no matter what size you are!  I’m all about recognizing detestable fashions and giving guidance on dressing to flatter your figure and style but it does sadden me when some people feel they can’t wear colored bottoms because they fear it will be unflattering.  Trust me colored pants will not be the undoing of you.   If they aren’t your thing fine but I hope it’s not because you feel you don’t have the body for them.
