What I Want

In no particular order here’s a short list of items currently on my wishlist::

  1. A basic blazer:: Believe it or not but I have yet to own this classic wardrobe piece.  I do have a few that are part of suiting but they aren’t really good for everyday use.  Finding the right one can be quite tricky especially for someone as tiny as me but I’m not giving up!  Black or navy is what I’m going for.
  2. Brown/tan flat boots:: I already have my Steve Maddens which are comfortable for the most part but they do end up stubbing my toes after a long day.  A nice comfy pair of flat boots would be great this winter.
  3. A Black handbag:: Black has always been a staple for me when it comes to handbags but somehow I currently own none amongst my collection.  Not sure how that happened other than I just can’t seem to find one I like.  Will 2012 finally be the year I commit to something and just buy it?
  4. Copic Markers:: The crème de la crème of markers or so I’ve heard.  I have been eying these babies for quite some time but they are so not in my budget.  I do have some markers in the make of Prismacolor and Tria.  However I find tips on the Prismas a bit difficult to work with for my needs and to my dismay the packaging for the Trias was so cumbersome they pretty much all dried out.  What a waste, it hurt a lot having to throw them out!  I’m so ready to try the Copics but it’s going to be an investment.
  5. A new camera::  Not sure what I want yet.  Will have to do some research but I do know that my current point and shoot isn’t up to par. It would be really nice to provide better images on this blog.  A DSLR would be amazing but I definitely don’t have the bank for one yet so I’m just looking for an upgrade.  Any suggestions for something more affordable like less than 200?  Or am I asking too much for too little?

It probably comes as no surprise that I’m not even close to affording any of these right now.  However since it’s the start of a new year I thought it would be nice to make a list of wants as mini-goals to acquire. I think knowing exactly what I really want will help me keep my eye on the prize and away from frivolous purchases.  I’ll revisit this list in a few months to see if anything changes and if I’m lucky enough to cross anything off the list.  Wish me luck, I so need it.

What’s on your wish-list?  Do you have any strategies in place to get what you want?

Rainy Day Wishes:: Burberry Check, Mate

Burberry Wellies

It’s been raining a lot where I live.  I suppose I should be glad it’s rain and not snow yet but that’s not much consolation.  When it rains all I want is to curl up in a ball and stay warm and DRY indoors.  I don’t like getting wet and it’s not because I’m a witch (sorry to disappoint) or am worried about my hair and I’ve got curly hair yo.  I just don’t like the feeling.

Who likes to get damp?

Wet hems are the WORST which is why I really need some rainboots.  Rainboots like a pair of classic check print Burberry wellies.  Now I’m not usually a whore for designer labels but this is one item I’ve always secretly wanted and by always I mean for the past few years, maybe.  I do adore that classic check print and at $200-300 some for a pair they aren’t totally unattainable either.  I think having a pair would motivate me to get out and not give a frick about a few drops of water.  So who’s buying??  A girl can dream (while curled up in a ball) right?  Might as well throw in a lovely Burberry print scarf in the mix too!  By the way I didn’t even know this Haymarket Check Rainboot version with leather band and tassel accent existed. >> *swoon*

How To Avoid Dressing Frumpy In The Winter

Everyone gets excited for fall fashion but fast forward a few months when the temperatures dip below zero and the snow has lost its charm; suddenly getting dressed for the day isn’t so fun anymore.  It’s about wearing whatever you can to get through the day.  So depending on your threshold for cold temperatures perhaps you are at a pass for how to look chic during those long, dark and cold winter months.  Fear not because one doesn’t need to sacrifice comfort and warmth in order to look good.  Here are a few simple tips and suggestions::

  • Choose the right outerwear
I can’t stress this enough, choosing the right coat/s can mean the difference between looking like an overstuffed garbage bag or channeling Audrey Hepburn.  You decide.  Here are your most common coat options::
    • The Peacoat:  My go-to in the winter.
You can’t go wrong here, endless variations to suit anyone’s style.  This particular outerwear piece creates an instant chic factor and is my secret to looking good even on those days I could care less.  Here are some ways to accessorize this classic coat. p.s. – make sure to get your coat a good dry cleaning at least once a year and of course steam out those wrinkles should any surface.
    • The Puffer:  For those extra cold and wet days you can’t beat the comfort of a great puffer jacket.
How to find the perfect puffer coat:
Don’t choose styles that are too long (full length) or short (say no to bombers). Do find a coat that sits below your waist yet above your knees.
      Don’t
wear anything overly puffy -  unless you dig the Michelin man look.
Do pick coats with contouring at the waist.  Belted varieties are a great choice because they create shape and break up the ‘puffiness’.
      Don’t
wear anything overly shiny – aka the trash bag
      Do
opt for black, brown or white shades with metal hardware for timeless style.

**Add interest to your outerwear by accessorizing with colorful and printed gloves, scarves and hats**

  • Fleece Lined Leggings
I acquired a pair of these last year and let me just say — amazing!  They may be a little pricier than your standard pair of leggings but so worth it.  Super warm and cozy they are your ticket to wearing skirts and dresses in the winter.

Affordable options::

    • Shopbop: Plush footless tights – available in 3 colors
    • Anthropologie: Fleece-Lined Leggings – available in 2 colors
    • Deb: Fleece lined black legging
  • Functional boots need not be ugly
If you follow HPS on Facebook you’ll remember that I shared this article on functional winter boots that aren’t total eye soars.  These are some great options if your daily commute involves trudging through snowy streets.  You can always bring a pair of shoes to swap into once you reach your destination, i.e. work etc.

Other boot suggestions::

    • Nothing beats a great pair of leather boots but having them destroyed from repeated exposure to salt and moisture is devastating — I know this from personal experience.  Thankfully there are plenty of faux-leather options which will be lighter on your wallet, animal friendly and easier to keep clean.  Also if they happen to fall apart you won’t feel as bad pitching them.
    • I suggest wearing flats or low heels in the winter but if you must do a high-heel opt for a wedge or chunky heel as they will provide you with much more stability.  Save your stilettos for special occasions.
  • Fabrics of choice:
    • Polyester – As much as I hate to say it polyester isn’t a bad choice in the winter because of it’s heat retaining properties.  Good thing because non-poly garments are few and far to come by these days anyway.
    • Wool – merino, cashmere, etc it’s the lush and warm fabric of choice of winter. If you find wool irritating to your skin look for acrylic blends instead.
    • Tightly woven thicker fabrics are preferable for your bottoms: think heavy twills and corduroy.  Tweeds for professional attire.  It goes without saying that denim is always an option.
  • Layer wisely
Layering your wardrobe in the winter doesn’t mean having to pile on everything you own.   If you have a warm coat extensive layering is unnecessary, again it depends on your threshold for cold temps.  However should you need to keep warm indoors start with your basics and build up:  Those summer tanks and camis are the perfect extra layer to wear without adding bulk.  Lace lined camis add a hint of femininity to sweaters and tops that they are paired with.
A nice basic button up is another good base to layer with your sweaters and scarves.
If your a person who finds the winter extra nippy, thermals are just what you may need.  I’m not talking about the thermals of your (or maybe just mine?) childhood either.  Adult thermals now come in light weight fabrics that won’t add unnecessary bulk but still give you the extra warmth you seek.

Here are some adult options:

    • Jockey – body hugging, no-panty line options
    • Hanes – women’s thermals on sale
    • JCPenny – several color options available

So there you have it, a few bullet points on how to avoid the frump this winter >> Looking fabulous does NOT require sacrificing comfort.

Divine Design:: Charlotte Olympia SS12

Ok you know I’m not one to hop on bandwagons and blog about what everyone else is gushing over but in this case geez I couldn’t hold back.  I fell in love with a heel.  Funny that this post follows my detest for another, but I had to share this before it becomes old news.  Or is it already?  Whatever the case eye candy is all I can afford these days so I eat it up whenever I can (hah, like these were ever in my range).  Now enough of my chatter, go on and check out the rest of the collection if you haven’t already.  If you have this is the perfect excuse to have another drool session.  You’re welcome.

Detestable Fashion:: The Jeffrey Campbell “Lita”

Fashion Bitchery:: The Jeffery Campbell "Lita"

Behold the ugliest of trending platforms:: the Jeffrey Campbell “Lita”.  This shoe is one hot ticket amongst fashionistas and beauty bloggers alike.  Perhaps you are one of the aforementioned who owns a pair or are coveting one, erm sorry to disappoint but I can’t understand why you’d want to wear this hideous hoof-like shoe.  Yes hoof-like, go ahead check out anyone wearing this shoe and tell me it doesn’t look like they are veering into equine/bovine territory.  I’m all for interesting shoe design but this is one sky high that needs to come tumbling down.

What do you think?  Own a pair or wanting to?  Sound off!
