Reader Q&A: Gaga vs. Kardashian

You ask, I answer…

Q:  kim kardashian….lady gaga…in the news allllll the time. fashion all stars or fashion all crap?

A:  Yes these two are everywhere.  I’ve even seen Gaga inspired clothing for your pooch.  Make of them what you will but these two have certified a place for themselves as style icons.  I admit to getting annoyed by the overload of coverage these two get (or any celeb), but the surest remedy for that is for me to tune out and stay away from all of the tabloidy junk.  If you look past the “crap” there is something to be said for both of these ladies:

Lady GagaKim Kardashian

  • Gaga:  I have to laugh every time I see her on a worst dressed list.  Really is it even worth categorizing her on the same level as everyone else?  Her fashion disasters could be just about every outfit if you scrutinize her fashion statements that way.  While I don’t think her fashion choices are anything for the rest of us to emulate past Halloween, what you can take away from her fashion choices is her fearlessness.  She puts something on and doesn’t care what anyone thinks.  She’s not afraid to break the mold and take risks in her fashion statements.  That’s something most of us aren’t willing to do.
  • Kardashian:  Love her, hate her she is not going anywhere anytime soon.  If you look past what brought her to the public’s attention her staying power comes in that many have grown tired of stick thin, tall, blondes being our style icons.  Here you have a curvaceous brunette who isn’t afraid to flaunt it (as many have seen in extra detail).  As for her icon status it should be known well before she found her uh fame she was working her way up as a stylist to the stars and running a boutique with her sisters.  Now she’s taking her fame and making the most of it, (would you do any different?): there’s the fragrances, jewelry line, stylist for ShoeDazzle and last but not least a clothing line for QVC.  As a style icon she has certainly made her mark.

Color Rules!

Are there really any rules here?

  • Can you wear black and brown together?  Yes

There are a lot of people who shy away from this and that’s ok if you want to play it safe.  I admit to avoiding this combination for years.  It’s one thing not knowing how to wear this combo, but there are those who still can’t seem to grasp the notion of this being ok.  In my days working retail one of our mannequins once displayed a leopard print cardigan worn with a black shirt.  The mildest of black/brown combos around, yet I heard a customer under their breath declare what a fashion faux pas it was.  Give me a break and loosen up people!  After all black and brown coexist in nature…my skin and hair are an example of it.

Examples of how to do it:
- Black suit with brown shirt and vice versa
- A black dress with brown boots
- See pic, you get the idea

  • White after Labor Day?  Yes

Probably the dumbest of all the rules imo.  A uniquely American holiday so while the rest of the world wears white as they please we are wasting our time pondering if it’s appropriate.  Really who follows this ‘rule’ anymore?  I know I never did or even cared that it was one.

  • Can you mix metals?  Yes

Yet another concept I avoided for years.  Oh how boring my wardrobe was.  Mixing and matching metals can be a lot of fun.  After all they are all metal so that’s one thing going for this color scheme.  A lot of clothing and accessories already mix them within the design so accenting with your choice of color/s is simple.  Just be consistent.  Wearing all gold jewelry and then mixing it up by wearing silver shoes probably isn’t the way to do it.

Examples of how to do it:
- Mix contrasting metals, think silver with bronze or gold with gunmetal.
- Stay within a temp by mixing warm metals together: golds, bronzes, and coppers or mix cool metals: silvers with pewter and gunmetal etc.
- If your clothing mixes metals within the print or beading, pick one or two of the colors to accent with your accessories.  (This is also a great way to change up a garment by choosing different metals to accessorize with on different occasions.)

It’s time to break free of these rigid ‘rules’ and have some fun.  Fashion should be and can be effortless.  The less you have to think about the freer you can be.

Style Basics: Color

What colors best suit you, and how does one determine this?  Well it largely depends on your skin tone and hair color combination.  There really is no definitive answer, but the following resources can help you determine which colors might look best on you:

Here are few tips and observations on my part:

  • For the fair and lovely pale skins:
Please stay away from the fleshy neutrals.  Seriously why would you want to wear something the same color as your skin.  It completely washes you out!  How many times have I seen Nicole Kidman wear a pale pink, peach or other light flesh toned dress to some event.  Boring, blah and ew it does NOT look good.  Actually this is a rule for everyone, stay away from colors that resemble your flesh!
  • For the sun kissed brown skins:
Yellow!  How beautiful this color looks against darker skin.  It brings out your undertones and provides a beautiful contrast for those with the darkest of brown skin.

  • Turquoise the color of all colors:
I have yet to see a person who doesn’t look good in this color.  Whether or not you like this color is another story.  I’m just saying it looks good regardless if it’s your thing or not.  There are different hues and saturations of this color but in general blue/green shades are a go to any time of the year in my opinion.

At the end of the day it comes down to experimenting and asking others how you look to really gauge which colors suit you the best.  Don’t stress out over the process, the world is a colorful place so there is something for everyone.

Tight Ain’t Right

Ever.  Why is it as soon as summer rolls around all the nasties come out to play.  I guess in the winter we had puffy coat’s to conceal the fashion disaster underneath.

                Â

For dressing in the summer here are some things to ponder; tight skimpy clothes aren’t going to:

  1. Make you look thinner:  How about it’s actually like taking a highlighter to your body and amplifying all of your imperfections. Time and time again woman (or men) get the notion that by wearing clingy clothing they will look smaller.  Wearing clothes that don’t hug your every curve will actually conceal your rolls and make you look less like a shelf of spare inner tubes.
  2. Ward off the heat:  It’s like wrapping yourself in plastic wrap and sticking yourself out in the sun to bake.  Point is you are going to be suffocationg and sweating like a mofo.  Give your skin some room to breathe.
  3. Attract positive attention:  More like what’s your going rate hon?

Hats On!

I was at work the other day and in walks this kid about 11 or 12 decked out in a Calvin Klein hat.  Similar to this:Â
The rest of his attire was typical for a kid his age; shorts, t-shirt and sneakers.  What stood out of course was the hat.  I’d never seen a kid of his age rock a hat like that.  It was fantastic and somehow the kid made it work with his outfit.  Had I not been at work I would have attempted to get a pic to share.

This brings me to my question:  What ever happened to wearing hats?  How many of you own any and do you ever wear them (I’m not talking about your winter knit hats)? You just don’t see people wearing them so much anymore in todays society.  Sure every now and then there’s a fad like the trucker hat phase from a few years back but in general people don’t wear them.

Though my picture might suggest hats are high maintenance, and for the prim and proper, it’s not true.  I mean how hard is it to plop a hat on your head?  Hats have really come a long way from being a symbol of class in society.  They can be the perfect splash of style to any wardrobe, from casual to dressy.  With summer well underway it’s the perfect time to dabble in this seemingly lost accessory.  It’s an easy and stylish protection for you hair and scalp from those harsh rays of the sun.  Oh and there are many shapes and styles (google it), so the “but hats don’t look good on me” isn’t an excuse.  Just like an item of clothing all you need is to find the right style!  I may be a hypocrite in writing this as I own maybe 2 hats but I promise I will be experimenting, and when I do I’ll be sure to share.

By the way the pic is of my little bro, I mean how dapper does he look with the hat!
